Student of the Year

Houlton’s 350th Apprentice is Student of the Year and collects £350!

Houlton’s apprentice Josh Hunter has scooped 4 awards in a month!
Josh, a Building & Maintenance Brickwork Apprentice, had a very busy month recently.

  • He started the month winning a brickwork competition in the senior category at this year’s Yorkshire Guild of Bricklayers.
  • He then went on to win the Award for the Most Outstanding Student on an Apprentice Programme 2014 and the Award for the Most Outstanding Apprenticeship on a Brickwork Level 2 Course 2014 at the Hull College Construction Awards evening.
  • Josh then completed his academic year by winning the Student of the Year Award on a Work Based Learning Course 2014 at the prestigious Hull College Awards Ceremony at Hull City Hall. Josh, who takes everything in his stride, was actually on a prearranged holiday at the time of the awards, submitted a video in his acceptance speech stating  “I really enjoy working at Houlton and hope I can work there for as long as I can”

Josh is the 350th Houlton apprentice in 135 years trading - our first indentured apprentice was Thomas Bishop, bricklayer and plasterer, who started a 5 year apprenticeship in November 1879 and then went onto serve with the company for 57 years!

Andrew Kingston presented Josh with an award for his excellent efforts from the company of £350 in addition to the £100 from the company for winning the brickwork competition.
