The business employs over 120 people and operates across three main areas - Building & Maintenance, Construction and Developments, supported by our Plant division. Geo. Houlton & Sons Ltd is a subsidiary of the group's parent company Geo. Houlton & Sons (Holdings) Ltd - fully owned by the Houlton family.
The business today operates in the building, maintenance, construction and development sectors principally across Hull, the East Riding of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Projects further afield are increasingly undertaken where existing Clients require our services with successful delivery from Glasgow to London. Client satisfaction is very important in our business planning with an average of 73% repeat business over the years, based on turnover.
The Building & Maintenance division undertakes various projects up to £1 million with a strong local Client base using dedicated teams for key customers. They undertake public authority, industrial, commercial and retail maintenance, facilities management, repairs, refurbishment, term maintenance and new build operations. They manage some 1,400 projects annually with a fleet of vans and pick-ups for their workforce.
The Construction division undertakes projects from £1 million - £10 million, dealing with a strong Client base of public authority, industrial, commercial, retail and development. Projects are managed from the Hull office but we use extensive site based teams where appropriate. Typically some 15 – 20 individual projects are undertaken each year. The site based teams of groundworkers, bricklayers and joiners are trained to the highest standards and have skills and experience across a wide range of projects.
Our Plant division provides a full plant hire and transport service to the Company. Equipment available includes teleporters, rough terrain forklifts, dumpers, generators, mini-diggers, mixers, small tools and equipment, as well as many site offices, stores, toilets and other sundries.
Our friendly and professional head office provides all the back-up services needed for a contracting business working in the 21st century, and we place great importance in our health and safety and staff welfare commitments. ICT also plays a crucial role in managing our projects and we use a company information portal (intranet) to manage information flow across the Company.
The Company Business Plan for the Future is that the family owned Houlton group will continue to provide ‘Quality Construction Built On Tradition’ to satisfy its Clients and produce a sustainable and adequate return for the Stakeholders in the business. The plan is to provide Shareholders with a sustainable reasonable distribution of profits each year and to provide Employees with stable continuing employment together with a commensurate reward for their efforts in a safe, secure and happy environment.
