Hull Royal Infirmary Emergency Department Reconfiguration
Houlton undertook the £3.5m third and fourth phases of the Emergency Department Reconfiguration Scheme at Hull Royal Infirmary after successfully completing the new Adult Emergency Care’ area and the Children’s Emergency Department which opened previously. This YORbuild project also involved construction of new extensions at the rear and sides of the hospital as part of the re-development.
A total of £7m was spent by the Health Trust extending the department space to double its current size. It also has 18 treatment areas instead of five.
Construction works consisted of demolitions, new extensions, alterations and refurbishments including mechanical and electrical installations to include:
• 8 Initial Assessment Cubicles
• 10 Resuscitation Cubicles
• 1 Paediatric Resuscitation Cubicle
• 24 Majors Cubicles
• Ancillary Accomodation
Work to redevelop the ‘Majors’ area, where people receive treatment for life-threatening illness or injury and major trauma, marked the final stage of the hospital’s Emergency Department renovations. The team on the project worked double shifts and extra hours to try to get everything complete before the busy winter period..
Staff have to cope with 120,000 patients each year in a hospital that was originally built to treat about 50,000.
Work has also included constructing the foundation pads on the roof of the rear podium block behind the tower block to receive a new 24-bed modular ward building. It was lifted into place by one of the UK’s largest cranes, weighing in at 500 tonnes. Ward 500, as it is known, helps alleviate pressure in the winter months, reducing the need to transfer patients between HRI and Castle Hill and to place medical patients on surgical wards.
