As a long established family company Houlton has always taken a long term view of its operations aiming to ensure a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. It has meant maintaining growth and employment while protecting the environment, making prudent use of natural resources and achieving progress recognising the needs of all members of society.

The Company's sustainable materials policy is to:

• Purchase from local suppliers whenever practicable
• Ensure suppliers are subject to a review process
• Ensure that sustainable alternatives are given total cost benefit prior to award
• Promote continuous improvement through regular meetings with the Supply Chain
• Consider waste generation and the cost of waste prior to awarding contracts
• Ensure that all purchases, whenever practicable, have low toxicity and empty canisters are not classed as hazardous waste
• Look at best practice for removal of waste, such as Siniat's GTEC Wasteline Direct, to maximise recycling benefits
• Purchase timber and manufactured timber products from FSC or similar certified schemes
• Work with Designers to achieve the best selection of sustainable and recyclable materials as part of the design process
• Consider the most efficient transport method for delivery
• Ensure materials are delivered in the quantity that the site can handle to minimise waste
• Ensure the correct quantity and quality of materials are delivered
• Constantly review the adequacy and environmental sustainability of packaging
• Share good practice with all our supply chain for continuous improvement
