The Company has a strong commitment to supporting local charities and nominate a new partner at the beginning of each year.
As well as being a close family, we’re also proud of the close friends we have made over the years. One such relationship is with the prestigious Ferens Art Gallery in Hull and we are delighted to be the sponsors of the regular Friends of the Ferens newsletter.
Houlton also supports this annual ‘Night Challenge’ event. As part of our commitment to the YORbuild Humberside Police Maintenance Contract, we support the annual Police ‘Night Challenge’ by providing temporary toilets and lighting facilities. A total of 150 youngsters, aged between 13 and 17 from across the Humberside Police area take part in the overnight 13 mile hike challenge in total darkness! The aim is to offer adventure away from illegal pursuits young people can be influenced by.
Continued support for this annual enjoyable event by supplying temporary portable office facility for use by event officials and timekeepers.
Houlton supported the Rotary Club of Humberside Bursary Scheme 2015 Spring Concert. Our local Rotary Club joined forces with the Hull Music Service to promote the musical talent of the young people of Hull and their bursary scheme through this concert at Hull City Hall. The concert had something for everyone's musical taste from classical to jazz and featured The City of Hull Youth Symphony Orchestra, Youth Brass Band, Symphonic Wind Band, Youth Jazz Band and Youth Percussion Ensemble.
Houlton were pleased to sign up as a Corporate Member of the Hull Civic Society in January 2015 after having supported the society and been proud to receive many 'Good Marks' for schemes over the years. From its inception in 1964, the Society has aimed to represent those who wish to make suggestions for improving the environment of our city – to make Hull a better place to live, work, play and invest.
With the commencement of our £710k Bransholme Police Station Refurbishment scheme for Humberside Police, we approached the nearby Winifred Holtby Academy to discuss ways of engaging with local children to fulfil our YORbuild ESP (Employment Skills Plan) commitments. Our proposal was to provide a maths based workshop in 3 separate one hour sessions over a 3 week period titled “Maths in Construction” to 50 of their Year 9 students. These sessions were presented by Houlton’s Harry Miller assisted by Sue Dobbs, with each session having its own topic, guiding the students with the basics of understanding construction drawings, reading and taking dimensions with a scale rule, designing their own Youth Club and preparing and costing the Fit-Out of the Youth Club on a spreadsheet based Schedule of Work.
Harry, a Quantity Surveyor with Houlton Building & Maintenance Division commented “I was initially daunted by the prospect of returning to school as the teacher, but once the first session started the students engaged enthusiastically and I really enjoyed the experience.”
A class teachers said 'the experience the students had was something they will remember as they were allowed to see clearly how mathematics is used outside of school. A lot of students were not aware that maths is a big part of employment and that it is so vital to their future job prospects. The lessons themselves were very engaging for the students and allowed the teachers to develop activities around their lessons to reinforce the students understanding of how mathematics is used.'
As work progressed on the Goodwin Community College project, the Houlton team engaged with local students, Construction Skills College and The Goodwin Trust to arrange A Good Day to Learn. Young people from Winifred Holtby School were offered an opportunity with the help of Hull College and Houlton apprentices to learn brickwork and joinery from the experts as part of Houlton’s continuing CSR and its support to YORbuild. Rob Alexander, Assistant Head of Department at Winifred Holtby, said: “This event fits perfectly with our on-going drive to seek out the best possible future career paths for our pupils. The kids were really excited about the day and couldn’t wait to show the city what they have to offer in terms of commitment and enthusiasm.”
