Houlton were pleased to construct an exciting £4.0m project at Craven College’s Aireville Campus in the beautiful town of Skipton, North Yorkshire.
It was another YORbuild project and designed to provide first class new and refurbished accommodation for students and teaching staff. The project further consolidated the College on the Aireville site and ensured that even more students have the opportunity to easily access the full range of College services and resources.
New Construction and Engineering Facilities
A new building at the Aireville Campus was provided for the Construction curriculum area to replace leased accommodation at the Snaygill Industrial Estate. This new and attractive building incorporated:
• Bench joinery workshop
• Joinery project area
• Joinery machine shop
• Brick workshop
• Trowel trades workshop
• Painting and decorating workshop
• Workroom for teaching staff
Whernside Building
The majority of the Whernside building was refurbished to provide modern and exciting new learning and social space. The whole building was reclad to improve its thermal performance and provide a more comfortable and cost effective building. The recladding created a new and modern focal point for the whole campus.
The concept behind the building was to bring together the central services to support the student – reception, Learning Resources Centre, Learning Support, Enterprise, Shop and social area.
The accommodation on the middle floor includes:
• Reception area
• Shop and social area
• Student Support Services
The accommodation on the upper floor will include:
• Remodelled and expanded Learning Resources Centre
• Quiet study area
• Enterprise zone
• Learning support
The ground floor will include:
• Refurbished and improved toilets
• Additional workroom accommodation
The Hub
The Hub building at the Aireville Campus was also refurbished to provide:
• Fitness suite for sports students
• New showers and changing rooms
• Sports Science laboratory
• Classroom
• Workroom for sports teaching staff
• Workrooms for the Human Resources Department
The fitness suite is available for use by staff and students outside timetable hours to promote fitness and well-being.
Sustainability
The new building for construction and engineering has been constructed to a very high standard to ensure it contributes to reducing the Colleges carbon footprint and reduce its longer term operating costs allowing it to maximise the resources available for learning and teaching.
The new buildings were built to achieve a BREEAM “Outstanding” rating and the refurbished building a BREEAM “Very Good” rating.
