Another project at Lincoln Hospital for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
Houlton were engaged by the Trust to deliver a modern, self contained Breast Screening and Cancer Facility with easy patient access. The Trust had identified unused research facility buildings already located within the Lincoln Hospital complex to house the Breast Screening facility.
There were two adjoining, but separate, single storey buildings, with a further adjoining two storey building at one end which required delicate design work due to conservation requirements. All of the buildings were to be refurbished as part of the project and required close coordination and communication with the Trust and staff to plan shutdown periods and material movements as the the project was undertaken whilst the Hospital was operational.
In order to accommodate the latest screening equipment we created 3 Mammography rooms and 2 Ultrasound Rooms. We also created consultation rooms, doctors rooms, offices, security and staff facilities. The creation of these spaces also meant we had to undertake significant renewal works to electrical, mechanical, plumbing and heating services and equipment.
The initial phase of the project entailed removing existing equipment and making the building watertight. A new insulated roof covering was installed to improve the thermal performance of the buildings and ensure water integrity.
The internal remodelling was designed to enable free flowing access between all the departments. A link extension formed a wider link between the two main ground floor areas, a chaired lift was fitted to allow full access for service users as well as new reception areas.
The new space also benefitted from fire certified door installation, extensive floor repairs and new finishes, new ceilings, modern low power lighting, ceiling mounted radiant panel heating, nurse call systems, fire detection and alarms, door access and control which created a safe environment for visitors to use the new assessment equipment.
The building extension created between the single storey and the two storey buildings provided the junction (and separation), between the distinct medical requirements of pre-diagnosis, and post diagnosis.
Externally we carried out works to the building's drainage, applied coloured render, new paths, ramps created paved and planted areas with seating.
