The project works were carried out in three phases:- 1) Enabling Works; 2) New School Building; 3) Demolition of existing Junior School and New Build Kitchen, Hall and Plant Room
The location of the site is within a residential area and we utilisied a proven format for a communication strategy engaging with residents and key stakeholders so that we did not cause disruption through our temporary intervention into the neighbourhood.
A key factor of the project was our involvement through Early Contractor Involvement stage, where we added value through our build solutions experience on other projects.
The existing school was susceptible to flooding and the replacement had a requirement to set the finished floor level 900mm above the existing floor levels. We offered a design solution using precast piles, caps and ring beams to create an entablature platform from which to commence construction. Additionally in order to assist program we offered a wall and floor solution using structural insulated panels (SIPS) which greatly speeded up the construction process and achieved excellent acoustic and air tightness levels.
Both of these examples were undertaken as contractor design elements, easing the design pressure on these structural elements and introducing modern methods of construction to our client.
The building is heated by ground source heat pumps, and with “intelligent” controls and lighting and is designed to run efficiently. Sedum roofs restrict rainwater run off and together with sustainable drainage the building presents an enhanced footprint to the existing school.
