The reconstruction of the market hall to provide a flexible auditorium space with seating for 150.
The works comprised the stripping out and partial demolition of the covered market hall that we built in back in 1983. We constructed a new mezzanine floor with all associated supports including localised foundations to support new/adjusted steel frame, construction of new external walls, roof and canopies, internal partitions, sound reducing works, bleacher seating, lift, new internal stairs, new external fire escape stair, finishes throughout, installation of new mechanical and electrical services installations and additional drainage to accommodate all the new facilities.
The new ground floor comprises: auditorium, dressing rooms, store, accessible WC’s, booking office, male WC, female WC, internal stairs, external fire escape and new lift, café, kitchen and store area, cellar, workshop and store, office and two staff WC’s and a covered area. The mezzanine floor comprises store, community council room, accessible WC, office, meeting room, technical gallery, sound desk, balcony, plant room and dining room.
External works comprised of foul and surface water drainage, upgrading incoming services, external paving and general repairs to existing structure and provision of external services for five portable artist studios.
The auditorium was visited by Grand Designs Kevin McCloud in April 2012 to shoot opening footage for the next series of the homebuilding programme. Kevin and the Channel 4 film crew were filming in the area and needed to use a cinema as a location. Charlie Studdy, arts and leisure manager at Goole Town Council and Houlton's project manager Chris Carline were delighted that the Junction provided Grand Designs with the cinema seating and projection facilities that the film crew needed. The episode filmed here is likely to be broadcast in autumn 2013.
