Houlton’s 350th Apprentice is Student of the Year and collects £350!
Houlton’s apprentice Josh Hunter has scooped 4 awards in a month! He started by winning a brickwork competition in the senior category at this year’s Yorkshire Guild of Bricklayers. He then went on to win the Award for the Most Outstanding Student on an Apprentice Programme 2014 and the Award for the Most Outstanding Apprenticeship on a Brickwork Level 2 Course 2014 at the Hull College Construction Awards evening.
Josh then completed his academic year by winning the Student of the Year Award on a Work Based Learning Course 2014 at the prestigious Hull College Awards Ceremony at Hull City Hall. Hull Trinity House Academy gained due recognition for its impressive appearance and functionality at a glittering Awards Ceremony at The Deep to mark the completion of the Hull Building Schools for the Future Programme. Scooping the Best Refurb Award for Design, recipient John Gledhill, Houlton Contracts Manager said “This was one of my most challenging projects, stripping back a dated façade to the structural skeleton before replacing it with energy efficient cladding and glazing was a major logistical exercise. Remodelling the interior to provide the correct learning adjacencies over 8 storeys provided its own issues, all within a 52 week contact period – and with a new build Sports Hall added in for good measure!”
Houlton is rightly proud of the timeless appearance of the new facility and the stature it adds to Hull Trinity House Academy.
Houlton were proud to receive a ‘Highly Commended’ award for our Hull Trinity House Academy project in the Project of the Year category at the now prestigious and renowned Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire & Humber Awards 2013 ceremony which celebrates the best of construction in the region.
The Awards ceremony highlights the hard work, innovation and positivity that is rife in our region with each project assessed by an industry working group to determine whether it should be considered for the awards. We were extremely pleased to be recognised by our peers for excellence in construction at the new Hull Trinity House Academy.

Our project at Withernsea School to create the Holderness Vocational Centre was the winner of the 'Best Education Building' at the recent Local Area Building Control North and East Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards 2013. It received the award for recognition of our high standards of construction and workmanship on the project.
Building Excellence Awards are all about the essence of good buildings. The finalists are not judged on architectural beauty, but on the "Excellence" shown from a construction and technical building control point of view. The awards showcase buildings and design teams that have had to tussle with technical issues, difficult sites, innovative and creative solutions.
The annual competition was organised under the auspices of the Guild of Bricklayers, and this year the Yorkshire Regions event was held locally at Hull College. Three bricklaying apprentices from Houlton were chosen from 40 Hull College students; one for each of the 3 sections; New Starters, Juniors and Seniors. Colleges from across Yorkshire were represented with a total of 38 bricklayers apprentice’s to compete in this year’s competition. The standard of the competition was very high, with all our apprentices giving a good account of themselves.
Lewis Jones faced some stern competition in the Senior section, Josh Hunter finished just outside the top three in the New Starters section, while Billy Grimmer won the Junior Section to be crowned “Yorkshire Bricklayer of the Year”.
