Houlton is committed to investing in people and developing the skills needed to support the future of the construction industry. The company encourages high standards of training and operates a structured apprenticeship programme, alongside established procedures for identifying and supporting the ongoing development needs of our employees.
We have built strong relationships with Hull Training and Adult Education and other local training providers, supporting opportunities for both new entrants and existing employees to gain qualifications, develop skills, and progress within their chosen careers.
Houlton welcomes up to three new apprentices each year. Our apprenticeship opportunities extend beyond site-based roles, with office-based apprenticeships also supported, including pathways in Quantity Surveying, Administration, and other professional disciplines.
Alongside developing new talent, Houlton places significant importance on the continued training and professional development of our existing workforce. We regularly review training requirements to ensure our employees maintain up-to-date knowledge, remain compliant with industry standards, and continue to develop their skills as systems, technologies, and best practices evolve.
Our site management teams regularly undertake industry-specific training, including NEC4 contract training, ensuring they have the knowledge and understanding required to effectively manage projects, support clients, and deliver successful outcomes. We also work with our training partner iHasco to provide a wide range of online and professional development courses, helping employees across all areas of the business continue their learning and maintain high standards.
Houlton is proud of its long-standing commitment to developing the next generation of talent. Our first indentured apprentice was Thomas Bishop, a bricklayer and plasterer, who began a five-year apprenticeship with the company in November 1879 and went on to serve Houlton for 57 years — a true example of the long-term career opportunities available within the business.
Our 350th apprentice, Josh Hunter, who joined in 2014, achieved outstanding success during his apprenticeship, being named the UK’s Best Bricklayer at the Guild of Bricklayers Competition. Josh went on to win a gold medal at the WorldSkills UK Finals before representing Team UK at the WorldSkills European Competition in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2016, and later competing at the WorldSkills World Competition in Abu Dhabi in 2017. His journey demonstrates the opportunities, recognition, and career progression that can come from dedication, training, and hard work.
We also continue to engage with local schools and colleges to promote awareness of the construction industry and highlight the wide range of career opportunities available. Through presentations, talks, site visits, and work experience placements, we help young people understand the industry and the pathways available to them.
As Houlton continues to grow, we remain committed to strengthening our workforce by attracting, training, and retaining talented individuals. Graduates, trainees, and apprentices are welcomed into the Houlton family, ensuring we continue to maintain the high standards and values that have been built over generations.
