On Tuesday, three lucky members of our team – Helen, Tim and Riannon – had the privilege of joining a fantastic class from Woodland Primary School for the brand new ‘Blitz Experience’, organised by Hull & East Yorkshire Children’s University (HEYCU).

The immersive day began with a warm welcome and engaging history session led by Shaun, who shared powerful insights into what life was like in Hull during the Blitz of World War II. With Hull being one of the most heavily bombed cities in the UK outside of London, the session laid the groundwork for a day full of learning and discovery.

Following the introduction, we set off on a city tour to explore various Blitz memorials, former bomb sites, and key landmarks that tell the story of Hull’s resilience. Seeing photographs of how these sites looked during and after the war – compared to their modern-day appearance.

After our information-packed morning, we returned to the KCOM Learning Zone to refuel with lunch and prepare for an exciting afternoon.

In the afternoon, the pupils broke into smaller groups, each led by Shaun, Rebecca, or Phil. The children took to the streets to interview members of the public, asking about their knowledge of the Blitz in Hull. The pupils showed incredible confidence and curiosity, impressing everyone with their enthusiastic engagement.

The final activity of the day brought creativity and imagination into the mix. Back at the learning centre, the children worked together to design a proposed rebuild of the historic Picturehouse on Beverley Road – a site that, like much of the city, suffered damage during the war. It was inspiring to see how the students combined what they had learned with fresh ideas to reimagine a piece of local history.

We’re incredibly proud to support HEY Children’s University and hope our partnership allows us to sponsor and take part in more experiences like this – connecting with local children and celebrating our city’s rich and resilient heritage.
